Does AHCCS Work Out of State?

Generally, no — AHCCCS doesn't cover routine care outside of Arizona. The one major exception is a medical emergency: if you or a family member has a true emergency while traveling out of state, AHCCCS may cover the emergency care once the provider submits the required documentation. Routine, non-emergency care outside Arizona isn't covered, and AHCCCS never covers care received outside the United States.

When Does AHCCCS Cover Out-of-State Care?

AHCCCS may cover out-of-state services in a few specific situations:

  • Medical emergency. If you or a family member has a life-threatening emergency while traveling within the country outside Arizona, AHCCCS may cover the emergency care. The out-of-state provider has to submit emergency documentation to get reimbursed.

  • Specialized care that's not available in Arizona. If a medically necessary treatment simply isn't available anywhere in Arizona, AHCCCS may authorize care at an out-of-state facility — but this requires prior authorization (your plan's advance approval) before you go.

  • When it's medically unsafe to transport you home. If moving a patient back to Arizona could put their health at risk, AHCCCS may cover continued out-of-state care until it's safe to transfer, provided the treatment is deemed medically necessary and authorized by the health plan in advance.

  • Some behavioral health and ABA therapy services. Certain prior-authorized behavioral health services may be covered out of state — check with your specific AHCCCS health plan.

What AHCCCS Does NOT Cover Out of State

The following generally aren't covered if you're outside of Arizona:

  • Routine doctor visits or primary care appointments

  • Prescription refills filled at out-of-state pharmacies (unless tied to an emergency)

  • Specialist visits that weren't prior-authorized

  • Any services received outside the United States

  • Care at providers not enrolled in AHCCCS

If you're planning to travel — whether that's a trip from Mohave County into Nevada or a family visit out of state — call your health plan before you go so you know exactly what to do if something comes up.

Not sure what your plan covers? You don't have to figure this out alone.
