Does Medicaid Cover IVF in Louisiana?
No — Louisiana Medicaid does not cover in vitro fertilization (IVF) or most assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
Louisiana Medicaid does cover other reproductive health care, like prenatal visits, birth control, and family planning counseling. But IVF and most other assisted reproductive technologies are excluded. This isn’t a Louisiana-specific gap — Medicaid programs nationwide almost universally exclude fertility treatment, so you’re not missing a benefit other states offer that Louisiana doesn’t.
One exception: if you’re about to start cancer treatment that could affect your fertility, egg or sperm freezing (fertility preservation) may be covered as part of your cancer care.
If you’re trying to start or grow your family and you’re not sure what your plan covers, call the number on your Medicaid ID card and ask specifically about fertility-related benefits.

What Reproductive Services Does Louisiana Medicaid Cover?
Even though IVF isn’t covered, your Medicaid plan does cover a range of reproductive health care:
Contraception and Family Planning
Family planning visits — up to 7 office visits per calendar year, including an annual well visit and care related to family planning
Birth control — all FDA-approved methods, including pills, patches, implants (like Nexplanon), injections, diaphragms, IUDs, and condoms
Sterilization — voluntary tubal ligation or vasectomy for adults over age 21
Maternity Care
Prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care — doctor visits, vitamins, ultrasounds, and vaginal or cesarean delivery in a hospital setting
Doula support — physical and emotional support from a certified doula before, during, and after childbirth. This is a newer benefit (Louisiana Medicaid plans only started covering doula services in January 2026), so availability and how easy it is to find an enrolled doula near you may still be catching up. Ask your managed care plan which doulas in your area are in-network.
Sexual Health and Cancer Screenings
STI testing and treatment — for sexually transmitted infections, with HIV and hepatitis testing handled through other Medicaid benefits
Well-woman exams and gynecological care — including cervical cancer screening and treatment for cervical dysplasia
What Are My Options If I'm Struggling with Infertility on Medicaid?
You have a few paths forward, even without IVF coverage:
1. Call your managed care plan.
Coverage details can vary slightly across Louisiana’s five managed care plans. Not sure which plan you have? It’s printed on your Medicaid ID card, or you can look it up by logging into your account at healthy.la.gov. Once you know your plan — AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, Aetna, Healthy Blue, Humana Healthy Horizons, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, or another plan — call and ask specifically what’s covered for your situation, since some related diagnostic care may be covered even when fertility treatment isn’t.
2. Look into a community health center near you.
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) across Louisiana offer reproductive health visits on a sliding-scale fee — meaning the cost is based on what you can afford. Find one atfindahealthcenter.hrsa.gov.
3. Look into fertility grants and nonprofits.
Some local and national organizations offer financial help for fertility treatment, though most have specific eligibility rules — like income caps, location requirements, application fees, or a required diagnosis from a specific clinic. A few worth knowing about:
The Gift of Hope, offered through Fertility Answers (with clinics in Baton Rouge and Lafayette), awards one or two free IVF cycles per year specifically to Louisiana residents. It's competitive, but it's one of the only programs built specifically for Louisiana families. Seeeligibility details.
RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association keeps anupdated list of fertility treatment grants and scholarships from nonprofits nationwide. Most aren't Louisiana-specific, but several have broad eligibility for any U.S. resident.
Nest Health compiles these third-party resources for informational purposes only. Some organizations may require non-refundable application fees, specific medical diagnoses, or community/faith alignment. Nest Health isn't affiliated with these organizations — review each one's current eligibility criteria directly before applying.
4. Ask about medication discount programs. The medications used during fertility treatment are often the most expensive part — and several pharmaceutical manufacturers offer income-based discount programs for patients without insurance coverage for fertility drugs. Ask your fertility provider's office about compassionate care or income-based medication assistance when you start treatment.
Not sure what your plan covers? You don't have to figure this out alone.
