Does Louisiana Medicaid Cover Abortions?
Louisiana Medicaid coverage for abortion is extremely limited because abortion is banned in Louisiana except in narrow medical situations. Whether Medicaid can pay for the care depends on both Louisiana law and federal Medicaid funding rules.
Federal rules known as the Hyde Amendment allow federal Medicaid money to pay for abortion only when a pregnancy endangers the pregnant person's life or results from rape or incest. But Louisiana law is more restrictive: the state's abortion ban does not generally allow abortion because of rape or incest alone.

What Are the Exceptions for Abortion Coverage Under Louisiana Medicaid?
An abortion must meet both Louisiana law and Medicaid payment rules to be covered. Louisiana law allows certain medical procedures when a doctor determines they are needed to prevent death or a substantial risk of death, or to prevent serious, permanent damage to a life-sustaining organ. Louisiana law also has separate provisions for pregnancies diagnosed as medically futile.
Federal Medicaid funding rules are different. Under the Hyde Amendment, federal Medicaid funds may be used for abortions involving:
A pregnancy that endangers the pregnant person's life
A pregnancy that results from rape
A pregnancy that results from incest
However, a federal Medicaid funding category does not make an abortion legal under Louisiana law. Louisiana does not currently have a general rape or incest exception to its abortion ban.
A healthcare provider must determine whether the patient's medical situation meets the legal requirements and document the care appropriately.

What Pregnancy and Family Planning Services Does Louisiana Medicaid Cover?
Louisiana Medicaid covers many kinds of pregnancy and postpartum care. Coverage can include prenatal visits, lab tests, prescriptions, hospital care, labor and delivery, and care after pregnancy. Louisiana's pregnancy Medicaid program can provide coverage for up to 12 months after the end of a pregnancy.
Louisiana also has a program called Take Charge Plus for eligible people who need family planning services. Covered services can include birth control, family planning visits and counseling, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, and other family planning care.
